WATER SOFTENING SYSTEMS

Certain substances contained in water have a negative effect not only on human body but also on household appliances and sanitary equipment. A number of chemical elements dissolved in water such as magnesium and calcium lead to increase of water hardness and cause limescale to form on metal pipelines, water heating appliances and industrial equipment thus reducing their operational life and increasing energy consumption considerably by 30 – 40%.

Water softening process is a process of replacement of calcium and magnesium ions, which are resonsible for water hardness, by sodium ions. The process depends on ion-exchange resin contained in the softener through which the water runs. When the ion-exchange resin’s capacity is exhausted it is restored by using a salt solution – NaCl. The restoration frequency depends on the hardness and the quantity of water, which has passed through the softener. When selecting water softeners the following factors should be taken into consideration:
  • water hardness;
  • output (m3/h);
  • time necessary for the resin regeneration;

The options for control are:
  • by time (recommended for even water consumption);
  • by volume (recommended for uneven water consumption);

The systems are made of:
  • A fibreglass body;
  • An ion-exchange resin with a service life of up to 10 years;
  • A container with an increased anti-shock resistance;
  • A softener control unit carrying out all the water softening and regeneration processes.
  • The control unit is equipped with a built-in injector dosing the salt solution during the restoration process;
  • An appliance installed in the filter head which contributes to feeding with water also during the process of regeneration.
  • the duration of the regeneration process is up to 180 min.

Remarks:
Water should be purified in advance from mechanical impurities and the availability of iron prior engaging the water softening process. Otherwise the ion-exchange capacity of the resin will be reduced.
